Today we are working with that really cool chalkboard paper and the chalk inks. We began by making these really cute little labels that we attached to clothespins:
We also made these larger pieces that could be used for card fronts or tags on gifts or what have you:
And we learned a lot in working with these materials and would now like to pass all that wisdom on to you!
First of all, keep in mind that the chalk inks are not like the water-based inks of the Classic Ink Pads and, because of their formulaic differences (Woo-hoo! Such lofty language!), they take longer to dry. Much longer. So be sure to factor drying time into your project. You can heat set the ink for faster drying, but, frankly, it doesn’t do all that much.
Use the Stamp-a-ma-jig to perfectly align your stamps. This is especially useful when combining more than one stamped image.
We also experimented with using clear embossing powder and found that it creates a splotchy effect, which might be useful if you are looking for a grunge look, but, otherwise, skip the embossing powder.
One thing you for sure need to know is that this paper has a right side and a wrong side for stamping with the chalk inks. The right side feels different. It has a waxy coating (we have also heard it described as “velvet” or “filmy.”) Be sure to use this waxy side for any chalkboard stamping you want to do.
You can use the white craft ink on either side of the paper—it looks great!
Stampin’ Up! has the Colorbox Chalkboard Ink in three colors: Rose Coral, Yellow Citrus and Aquamarine. We loved the Rose and Yellow, but had a difficult time getting the Aquamarine to show up. But give it a try if you are looking for a faded, more subtle look.
